The Cilento region is thoroughly beautiful, blending the sapphire blue of the Mediterranean with the various shades of greenery and scents of a variety of flora, including olives, pines, oaks and myriad types of fruit trees that cover the hills, mountains and farmlands.

The area has in the last 10 years attracted the interest of discerning travelers. It holds beauties greater than Sorrento and Amalfi, but lacks the crush and rush of mass tourism. The beaches are larger and nearly all have the EU Blue Flag status. The Cilento of Italy is also recognisedand is of interest in scientific circles as a place where many inhabitants live into their hundreds, healthily. Excellent diet, that includes olive oil, wine, garlic and chilies are major factors, but also pure air and tranquility play their role.

Being part of ancient Magna Gracie it is home to the best preserved and most impressive Doric Greek Temples in the world (at Paestum), before even those at Athens. Many other archeological treasures are scattered throughout the coast and hills. At Ascea there is to be found the Greco-Roman settlement of Elea; the birth place, in no understatement, of the whole of modern western philosophy.

And to add to the attraction. a vast portion of the Cilento has been relegated the covetous status of being a UNESCO and MAB world heritage site, and is now known as the National Park of Cilento and Vallo di Diano. This status will almost certainly ensure that though the Cilento has a potential for new inhabitants, its unique character and condition will remain indefinitely.
